In the summer of 2014, HBMG Foundation launched its first Playwrights' Retreat! Six members of Central Texas' Scriptworks playwrights association
were invited to retreat in Creede, Colorado: Rita Anderson, Kalli Angel, James Burnside (pictured below), Ramon Carver (pictured below), Ihor Gowda and Anne Wynter!
In the beautiful valleys of the Rockies along the Rio Grande River, six playwrights escaped to escape reality, experience renewal, and, of course, write.
In addition, each writer was asked to attend one show at Creede Repertory Theatre
, a LORT D Theatre nestled in between the cliffs of Creede. Actors from Creede Rep volunteered with each playwright to read a script or scenes from the work they had produced that week. Thanks and thanks again to actors Christy Brandt, John Green*, Sean Thompson
*, Hannah Lake Chatham and Ann Pittman
. Additional thanks to John Gary Brown and Jane McPherson for offering their homes for script readings.
That summer opened up a world of possibilities and was the spark that started the flame that now fuels the Winter Playwrights' Retreat!
"Hosts, Ann Pitman and Manuel Zarate, graciously extended to writers a week’s writing space in the most scenic of log homes, nestled in the mountains, and I enjoyed ample free time to roam the woods and to write—at all hours. It is impossible not to be inspired in such a locale! Not only did the 'muse move me' while I was there, I wrote Act 1 of what will be a full-length play called, In the Land of Windmills
. There were only 'pluses' and 'positives' to this writing experience, which culminated in a staged reading with members of CRT and a coffee date with its AD. – I highly recommend this writing retreat!" Rita Anderson
